Soaking up knowledge: delivering on-site training for improved cleaning results

Monday, 23 September 2024
The cleaning industry evolves faster than is often realised.

With factors such as automation and sustainability currently among several factors reshaping the sector, Gill Ireson, Head of Sales here at Robert Scott, believes that manufacturers have a crucial role to play in supporting industry professionals to maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of cleaning regimes through education and training.
The importance of training in cleaning
Training in the cleaning sector has never been more important. Enhanced post-Covid hygiene standards, ambitious sustainability goals, and the integration of new technologies are colliding to create a backdrop of rapid change. Cleaning businesses are under pressure to meet these demands, while also facing challenges in recruitment.

The British Cleaning Council has reported that nearly a third of the 93,000 jobs created in the UK cleaning industry this year will be “hard to fill.” These staff shortages are impacting cleaning companies, with many unable to fulfil contracted hours.

To avoid burnout and high turnover, it’s essential as a minimum that cleaning operatives are equipped with the best tools for the job and receive effective training to use it.
Robert Scott’s commitment to training
Despite the need, many cleaning professionals struggle to access quality training and the right equipment. As a leader in the commercial cleaning sector with nearly 100 years of experience, we’re committed to addressing this gap. And with that in mind, we have long provided free assessment and training services to distributors and end-users, led by a dedicated ‘Clean Team’ that provides tailored, on-site solutions.

While the needs of each organisation we support is different, our approach typically starts with the team spending time with cleaning operatives to understand their specific challenges. From there, we deliver customised recommendations on the best suited solutions for their needs at hand, and associated training and demonstrations on those tools and the techniques that can help improve cleaning practices.

This end result is more hygienic spaces, cost efficiencies, and increased staff morale.
Tailored support across sectors
Our training services are available to and used by businesses across many sectors, from healthcare to hospitality.

Often, the process starts when a distributor asks for assistance with an end-user. For instance, when a new cleaning system is deployed, Robert Scott’s team ensures operatives are properly trained on how to use it, whether it’s a new trolley system or advanced technology like the Toucan Eco chemical-free cleaning solution or Metabots robotic scrubber dryers.

In addition to product-specific training, the expert Clean Team also provides general hygiene advice and insights, helping teams stay updated on the latest industry requirements. Currently, this includes the benefits of colour-coded product segregation, methods to reduce cross-contamination, and sustainable cleaning approaches.
Training in action
When Mecca Bingo sought to streamline its cleaning regime, the Clean Team conducted a review of its processes and products. The team identified inefficiencies, such as the premature disposal of reusable mop heads, and recommended switching to disposable Big White mops. This solution proved to be 30% cheaper, more absorbent, and eco-friendly, thanks to the detachable socket that reduces waste.

At Saltgreen Residential Care Home, staff relied heavily on traditional mops, buckets, and chemical cleaners. After we introduced them to microfibre systems, the care home saw a 25% reduction in cleaning time and significant cost savings. Staff morale also improved, as the team felt involved in the decision-making process and appreciated the benefits of the new system.
Continuing to invest in training
Our dedication to supporting the cleaning industry through training remains as strong as ever.

Indeed, we have recently started offering sessions at our new showroom and also welcome distributors to host their own events there. By making training as accessible and tailored as possible, our goal is to help cleaning professionals gain the knowledge and tools they need to deliver the best results possible in the most effective way.

If you would like to book a training session, site visit or use our showroom for your own meetings then please get in touch with your account manager.
