Our Big White's Are Top Of The Mops!
Tuesday 14th February 2012

A combination of a good challenge and raising money for charity are the reasons why Daniel Scott, the companies operations director decided to run 26 miles, there are not many people who would volunteer to run this distance!
Having crossed the finish line of the 2008 Great North Run, Daniel vowed he would never put his body through running that distance again, yet last year did just that and completed the 13 mile, (21km), Great North run in 1hr 45min beating his 2008 time by two minutes!

And since stopping playing rugby in 2008 he has completed many other endurance events, some of which have been reported in past Tales from the Bales - the 100 mile Bike Race, the Dualthlon, the Sprint Triathlon and most recently, TuffNutz. You may all well ask WHY Daniel?! - so we asked him............
“Well, having played Rugby Union for 15 years and having gone through all the training required to do it, you get used to the physical exertion and more importantly being able to eat & drink virtually what you want. So following on from stopping playing rugby I faced either a life style change of dieting or had to find some other way of burning those calories to keep in shape!”
“This year I made the decision to complete a Marathon, on the condition it was one of the world’s best. Knowing that getting a place to compete in the London Marathon could take years, if ever, to get and taking part in either the New York or Boston Marathon would cost a fortune, I opted for entering the Berlin Marathon. So on the 25th September I will be running in the 26mile (42km) race, twice as far as the distance I ran in 2008, the distance that I vowed never to run again!”
“Training is daunting and at times very boring and as I want to spend as much time as I can with my 2 & 4 year old children, being motivated to go running for several hours at night is very hard work. It’s not until you plan a 15-25 mile route that you realise just how far it is! A Marathon distance is like running from Greenfield to Heywood and back or Rochley Works to Manchester City centre”.
“At 6ft 5” and over 16 stone I know I’m not built for running long distances and realise that my body won’t be appreciating what I’m doing, which is why this really is a one off challenge. So, if you see me hobbling about the place at the end of September /early October you’ll know why and if you ask me why I did it I’ll probably say never again............ but then next year I’ve got my eye on completing an Olympic distance triathlon so probably best not to ask!”
Daniel has raised approximately £250 for Christies for his efforts plus some sweep stakes on his completion time, which is to be very proud of ........ 3 hours, 57 minutes and 24 seconds.
Well done! And well done for taking part!
Growing Direct is a creative Direct Relationship specialist working with businesses to market and identify opportunities within the UK fresh food supply chain, which in turn encourages us all to use and eat as much fresh food and vegetables as possible. And so, who better to, through their Chelmsford Relay for Life Team, try and break the world record for Apple Bobbing?!

They recently approached us with a request for 300 buckets to help with this effort and we, of course, said yes - as long as we were not expected to participate!
The record breaking attempt was not only a successful one but also managed to raise just under £90,000 - a magnificent effort and possibly one of the best uses our buckets have ever been used for! The organisers have registered the record breaking “Bob” with The Guinness Book of Records and are currently awaiting verification.
